The annual ACM SIGMOD Doctoral Dissertation Award, inaugurated in 2006, recognizes excellent research by doctoral candidates in the database field.
Jim Gray was a prolific database researcher who won the Turing Award in 1998 “for seminal contributions to database and transaction processing research and technical leadership in system implementation”. Jim Gray had a passion for sailing and got lost in the sea in 2007. In 2008, SIGMOD, with the unanimous approval of ACM Council, decided to rename the award to honor Dr. Jim Gray. The SIGMOD Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award Committee determines the recipient(s) of the award. Since then, the ACM SIGMOD Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award was given to 16 outstanding dissertations significantly contributing to the research field of data management. The complete list of award recipients can be found here.
The upcoming 2022 edition of the ACM SIGMOD Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award will be selected among submissions of dissertations awarded between September 1, 2020 and August 31, 2021.
