Jim Gray was a prolific database researcher who won the Turing Award in 1998 “for seminal contributions to database and transaction processing research and technical leadership in system implementation”. Jim Gray had a passion for sailing and got lost in the sea in 2007. In 2008, SIGMOD, with the unanimous approval of ACM Council, decided to rename the award to honor Dr. Jim Gray.
